Overview
Windows needs free storage for updates, temporary files, application caches, and virtual memory. Cleanup recommendations help identify removable content while keeping the user in control of what is deleted.
Troubleshooting Checklist
- Open Settings > System > Storage and review the Windows drive.
- Note any Windows low-storage warning and whether updates or applications report that more space is required.
- Open Cleanup recommendations and review every category before selecting files.
- Move important personal files to an approved backup location before removing them.
- Never manually delete Windows, Program Files, or unfamiliar system folders.
Common Indicators
- Windows reports low disk space.
- Updates fail because additional space is required.
- Applications cannot save or create temporary files.
- Disk activity remains high while little free space is available.
- Performance improves after safe cleanup and restart.
