Reading Windows Performance in Task Manager
Reviewed knowledge
This article has been approved for use in Gnojo.
Overview
Task Manager provides a live view of the applications and Windows processes using processor, memory, disk, and network resources. The goal is to observe sustained patterns before making a change—not to end unfamiliar processes.
Troubleshooting Checklist
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
- Wait about 30 seconds so brief startup spikes can settle.
- Select a CPU, Memory, or Disk column to identify the busiest processes.
- Confirm that a process is an application you recognize before closing it.
- Use Startup apps to review impact, but disable an item only after confirming that it is optional and understanding what it does.
Common Indicators
- CPU remains near full utilization even when the computer is idle.
- Memory stays very high while applications pause or reload.
- Disk remains at or near full activity for several minutes.
- Performance improves when a known, unused application is closed.
- The computer is slow mainly during the first few minutes after sign-in.
