Overview
This article supports the Check Network Adapter Status step in the VPN Connectivity Troubleshooting (Windows) workflow. It explains how to identify the status of physical and VPN network adapters without making unnecessary configuration changes.
Troubleshooting Checklist
- Save open work and confirm you are working on the intended device.
- Open Network Connections by pressing Windows + R, typing ncpa.cpl, and selecting OK.
- Identify the active physical network adapter and, if applicable, the VPN adapter used by your organization.
- Do not change unfamiliar, virtual machine, or organization-managed adapters.
- If the expected adapter is disabled, record its name and status before enabling it so the troubleshooting workflow can accurately document the change.
- Be aware that enabling a disabled adapter changes the system's network state and may require reconnecting to the network or VPN.
Common Indicators
- Ethernet adapter is disabled.
- Wi-Fi adapter is disconnected.
- Expected VPN adapter is missing.
- Only virtual adapters are present.
