Overview

A wired Ethernet connection depends on a secure physical connection between the computer and the network device. A loose, damaged, or disconnected cable can prevent the computer from reaching the network.

Troubleshooting Checklist

  1. Confirm the Ethernet cable is firmly connected to the computer.
  2. Confirm the other end is connected to the router, switch, wall jack, or docking station.
  3. If the computer, dock, or network device provides link lights, check whether they illuminate after the cable is connected.
  4. Inspect the cable and connector for visible damage.
  5. Test with a known-good Ethernet cable when one is available.

Common Indicators

  • No link or activity lights near the Ethernet port.
  • The connector feels loose or does not click into place.
  • Windows reports that the network cable is unplugged.
  • The connection works after reseating or replacing the cable.
